Broomfield, Colorado

Broomfield didn't just appear. Its existence wasn't part of a progression; it was planned from the get-go. In the 1950s, after farms had dotted the landscape for about a century, developers decisively created a "dream community." In a prim-and-proper epoch, a "dream community" was to be wholesome and family-oriented. Broomfield's vision has been gracefully carried out.

The Broomfield Community Center, a pivotal element of the arms-wide-open model, offers activities from 3 on 3 Women's Basketball Leagues to Senior Softball and Youth Volleyball. Outside the gym, Broomfield boasts 66 miles of trails, more than 700 acres of developed parks and 45 playgrounds, all with a magnificent view of the Rockies.

To add to the city's appeal, the Broomfield Event Center, a $45 million facility, recently broke ground. It will be the first step towards the Arista Project, a commercial-residential-entertainment district currently in its gestation period. The event center will be home to the Colorado Rage, a new Central Hockey League team, and the 14ers, part of the Continental Basketball Association. The facility is scheduled to open in November 2006.

Flatiron Crossing Mall, located just off Highway 36, is not only filled with premium retail—Coach, J. Crew, Aveda, Swarovski, Nordstroms—but is also surrounded by shops and restaurants like P.F. Chang's China Bistro. Complete with a twelve-screen movie theater, the complex offers visitors and residents entertainment and bragging rights.
