PRESS RELEASE
DENVER, COLORADO Monday, June 29, 2009 –
DENVER TEAM HANDBALL GROWING ONE OF THE LAST SPORTING FRONTIERS
RIGHT HERE IN COLORADO’S CAPITAL
Denver Team Handball was formed in the fall of 2008 as part of the national movement to develop, promote, educate and grow the sport of Team Handball at all levels in the United States and to enable United States athletes to achieve sustained competitive excellence to win medals in international and Olympic competition. DTH is a registered club with USA Team Handball - the National Governing Body for the Olympic discipline of Team Handball. USA Team Handball, a member of the International Handball Federation and the Pan American Team Handball Federation, was certified by the U.S. Olympic Committee on April 30, 2008.
Since Denver Team Handball’s establishment, the club has grown to approximately 50 registered members and counting. The members currently represent 10 different nations bringing different perspectives and experience from around the globe. The men’s and women’s squads practice one to two times per week, and take advantage of nearby teams like the Colorado Springs Landsharks and U.S. Air Force Falcons to scrimmage on a monthly basis. Denver Team Handball is also making a push to introduce young players to the sport as a feeder club to the USATH.
In May of 2009, members of Denver Team Handball and Minnesota Team Handball, another newly-formed US handball club, competed together as a team at 2009 Nationals and placed 19th. Several of DTH’s players also played with teams from New York, Houston, and Atlanta. Three of DTH’s players returned with medals from the national tournament. Handball standout Attila Agoston, also DTH’s coach and certified referee, won the gold with his former team from New York. Attila was also just recently named to the USA Competition Committee by the United State Olympic Committee. Attila and fellow teammates admit that DTH has big goals for this coming 2010 season including helping start several front range teams for a competitive league, increasing the number of junior players through fall camps, and winning the West Region Tournament and finishing in the top eight at 2010 Nationals.
Add NBA basketball star Carmelo Anthony to the growing list of Handball aficionados. In a September 2008 interview with Aaron J. Lopez of Rocky Mountain News, Anthony, a member of the USA Gold medal basketball team, was asked if there was another sport that he thought he could play? Anthony responded: "I wanna play handball, man. The U.S. needs to get a handball team. I'm pretty sure we can get some guys to go out there and play handball.”
Team Handball is played in 159 nations by 1,100,000 teams and 39 million individuals, making it the second most popular sport in the world. It has been an official Olympic Sport since 1936. The 2007 World Championships were the seventh most watched live sporting event on the planet. Many people link elements of basketball, soccer, and lacrosse to the sport. It is fast paced, physical, and exciting.
