Lafayette, Colorado

Lafayette is another one of those Colorado wonders: it’s technically been there for over a century, yet the majority of the town was built in the past ten years. Bad for the Historical Society, good for those who appreciate a convenient grocery store and strip mall. Head north of Denver, along US-36 (like you are heading to Boulder), and voila – Lafayette. Or whoa, horsey, Lafayette. The 25,000 people who comprise Lafayette have it made: half-hour from Denver, twenty minutes from Boulder, and plenty of breathing room.

Within city limits, Lafayette residents and visitors only have to blink and a new Vitamin Cottage or restaurant goes up. Currently, efforts to revitalize the Old Town district on Public Road are underway. For now, the intersection of Arapahoe and 95th Streets offers Forest Park, a restaurant hub, and the Atlas Valley shopping center, home to the 95th Street Festival of Colorado Wine in June. Each year, Lafayette also hosts the Oatmeal Festival (exactly what it sounds like), a Peach Festival and the Lafayette Days Festival.

Lafayette is a member of Boulder Valley School District. Centaurus High School is the main public secondary school, and new Peak-to-Peak Charter School provides education from Kindergarten to graduation. At Pioneer Elementary, students speak English half a day and Spanish the rest.
