Lakewood
Propped up against the foothills, Lakewood is a rapidly re-developing city of 140,000 people, adorned with recreational parks and an incomparable view of the Rockies. Unlike Denver's newer neighborhoods, Lakewood has endured some less-polished years, yet the city has pulled through with pizzazz. Enter Belmar, Lakewood's brand-new, brand name-filled shopping/eating/living/meeting center. Recently opened in April 2005, Belmar Center houses conference rooms, a 770-person Grand Ballroom, a 400-person covered plaza terrace, shops, lofts and everything in between, including an outdoor skate rink.
So the roads of Lakewood may not have been recently paved and the yards are not laden with sod, but having been around so long has its perks. For example, Lakewood has a developed arts and cultural community, exemplified by the Washington Heights Arts Center, a renovated school house that offers pottery, painting, woodworking and dance classes. The Lakewood Cultural Center, a 38,000-square-foot facility complete with a 310-seat theater, a community room, a gallery space and classrooms for cultural-arts classes, and the Lakewood Heritage Center, a museum in Belmar Park add to Lakewood's enrichment. Visitors will find reasonably priced Lakewood, Colorado hotels, including the Holiday Inn Lakewood.
Not only is Lakewood a hub for arts and cultural, it is replete with schools. The city is serviced by about 26 public elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 8 high schools,18 private schools and multiple K-12 optional schools. Colorado Christian University, Red Rocks Community College and the Rocky Mountain Deaf School are also located on Lakewood turf making it quite possibly the most scholastically inclined Denver suburb.
