Denver Kids, Inc. helps Denver Public Schools students, grades K-12, who face the personal challenges of higher risk environments, successfully complete high school, explore post-secondary options and become contributing members of the community.
Since 1946, Denver Kids, Inc. has provided educational counseling and mentoring to thousands of Denver Public School (DPS) students, grades K-12. Each child is provided with the support and guidance that most effectively minimizes the risk factors that are impeding academic success. The program strives to help each student achieve his or her potential by offering encouragement and addressing the factors that promote healthy social, physical, and mental development.
Denver Kids, Inc. is a preventive counseling and mentoring program that currently provides one-to-one guidance to over 1,000 students in DPS. Additional programs include Future Options, Parent Engagement and Enrichment Activities. School personnel, who recognize that the students’ problems extend beyond those that the schools' resources can address, refer students to Denver Kids, Inc. Each full-time Denver Kids, Inc. educational counselor works with a caseload of 55 to 65 students. They see students on a weekly to semi-monthly basis and are often the most stabilizing influence in the child’s life.
Referrals of students are encouraged in the elementary years, as research has shown that long term consistent support of at-risk students is most effective. On average, a student is in the program for eight years. Once a student has entered the program, Denver Kids, Inc. is committed to supporting the child through high school graduation as long as he or she remains a student of DPS.
Denver Kids, Inc. is successful in helping students achieve academic success through constant reinforcement of positive behaviors, exposure to a myriad of opportunities, and encouragement of academic achievement and attendance. The Reality
The graduation rate for DPS hovers around 50%. Those children most at-risk for dropping out of school are children from families that live in poverty and who come from single-parent homes. Denver Kids, Inc. works to ensure that our city's most vulnerable children are supported in their pursuit to achieve their academic potential.
Filling the Gap
Each student in our program is supported by a Denver Kids, Inc. educational counselor who provides long-term one-to-one academic and personal counseling to address a variety of needs. Many students are also matched with a Denver Kids, Inc. volunteer mentor from the community who commits his/her time and energy to serve as a positive adult role model in the child's life.
Every year, Denver Kids, Inc. students are beating the odds! Students in our program graduate at a rate 20% higher than the district average. The majority of our students are the first in their family to graduate from high school.
