In Roman mythology, Aurora was the goddess of the dawn. It's a suitable association for the Colorado city of the same name, as each day dawns beautifully in the midst of the Rocky Mountains. Not to be eclipsed by its giant neighbor Denver, Aurora is growing in its own right: from 276,393 in 2000 to 285,434 in 2003, per the U.S. Census Bureau.

Median home values have also climbed to $199,200 in 2005, but this vibrant city makes every dollar worth it. Some of Aurora's best attributes are the eclectic cultural and recreational opportunities it offers, including well-preserved historic sites and history museums, a restored 1940s performing arts center, a symphony orchestra, an Asian film festival, interpretive nature centers, miles of hiking and biking trails and an applauded Art in Public Places program. And that's just for starters!
