First Friday of the Year in Denver

There’s plenty of art, music, and dancing for everyone for the first Friday of 2018. These are just a few of the many, many things you can do on January 5.

Ai Weiwei Zodiac Heads/Circle of Animals Tour

Where: McNichols Civic Center Building, 144 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, Colorado 80202

What: Surely, by now you’ve seen the large animal heads surrounding the Sea Lions Fountain in Civic Center, but do you know their context and purpose? Denver Public Art put together a tour which will be led by Djamila Ricciardi and will cover the history of the installation, the life and work of artist Ai Weiwei, and his place in the contemporary art world. Attendees will meet in front of the McNichols Civic Center Building.

January First Friday Art Walk

Where: Santa Fe Drive, Denver, Colorado 80209

What: The first First Friday Art Walk of 2018 is happening this weekend! Every First Friday Art Walk takes place rain or shine or snow, so there’s a free guided shuttle that loops every 20 minutes from the 10th and Osage light rail stop, down Kalamath, and back north up Santa Fe.

Cost: Free admission (carry cash to donate for wine and beer)

We Still Live Exhibition Opening

Where: RedLine Contemporary Art Center, 2350 Arapahoe Street, Denver, Colorado 80205

What: Following up on the impactful “They Still Live,” Thomas “Detour” Evans has teamed up with Arts Street for “We Still Live.” This project is “aimed to provide (an) art-based, pro-social alternative to the influences of gang recruitment and community alienation for Denver area youth.” The exhibition runs through Friday, January 12 at RedLine.
